JTM Census

For acquirers

Owner search in your name

We write to the owners of companies that meet the succession test, in your name and with your wording, and pass on only the owners who say they're open to a conversation. The first run is charged per owner who agrees to speak.

How does owner search in our name work?

  1. You set the brief.

Sectors, regions and size band, and anything you'd rule out. The Owner Census shows how many companies meet the test in each sector and region, so you can see the pool before you start.

  2. We match it against the census.

The companies that meet the test and fit your brief. Any company that has asked to be left out is never on the list.

  3. You write the approach, or approve ours.

It goes out in your name, with your wording and your sign-off. Nothing is sent that you haven't seen.

  4. We pass on the owners who say yes.

Nothing about a company or its owner reaches you without the owner's written yes, recorded and dated. Once an owner has said yes, you see their reply in full.

  5. The conversation is yours.

From the first call onwards it's between you and the owner. We don't negotiate, value or advise.

Nothing runs until we've agreed the terms with you in writing, including how the data is handled.

What do you control?

  • The wording. Every word of the approach is yours, or approved by you.
  • The sign-off. It goes out under your name, not ours.
  • Every yes. You see the full reply of every owner who agrees to speak, and nothing about anyone who doesn't.

What does it cost?

The first run is charged per owner who agrees to speak. You pay for owners who say yes to a conversation, not for the number of companies written to. No price is published on this site, so email hello@jtmcensus.co.uk with your brief for a quote.

Runs after the first are agreed with you after the first run, once you've seen what it produced.

What doesn't JTM Census do?

We don't negotiate, value businesses or give legal, tax or financial advice. Nothing on this site is for sale and no company is named here. Our job ends when an owner who's open to a conversation has been passed to you.

Questions acquirers ask

  • Who do you write to?

Owners of companies on the public register that meet the test: a controlling owner aged 60 or over, and no current director or individual owner under 50. Within that, only the sectors, regions and size band in your brief. Any company that has asked to be left out is never written to.

  • Whose name is on the approach?

Yours. It goes out with your wording and your sign-off, and you approve the final text before anything is sent.

  • How do you charge?

Per owner who agrees to speak, on the first run. Runs after that are agreed with you after the first run, once you've seen what it produced. There's no published price, so email hello@jtmcensus.co.uk with your brief.

  • How many owners will agree to speak?

We can't tell you that in advance, and we don't promise a number. The census shows the size of the pool your brief draws from, and every owner who says yes comes to you with their reply in full.

  • Will you negotiate or value the company?

No. We don't negotiate, value businesses or give legal, tax or financial advice. You'll want your own advisers for that side.

  • Can an owner stop being contacted?

Yes, permanently, with a single email, and no fee is ever charged to an owner. The details are on Your company and this site.
